A Prophet’s Words is a video work composed of narration across five chapters, conceived as “words of wisdom delivered by the dead to the living.” The work originates from two sources: an interview with a displaced Korean who, following Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945, was forcibly separated from their family due to over seventy years of division between North and South Korea; and a news article about a refugee child found drowned on the southern coast of Turkey in the fall of 2015. These two events reflect the complex psychological conditions of individuals confronting tragic realities shaped by unavoidable socio-political forces. A Prophet’s Words unfolds through a poetic narration that overlays such inescapable realities with the intricate psychological state of Orpheus, emerging from the subterranean underworld of a pitch-dark cave toward the surface.
