The number '88' has a special significance in the minds of most South Koreans. It is the reminder of the 1988 Olympics that took place in Seoul and was a historic occasion in which the South Korean government showcased its miraculous economic development to the rest of the world. It must not be forgotten however, that behind this enormous accomplishment, were much suffering and sacrifices made by an entire generation of South Koreans. My work contains a positive number 8 carved out of a wooden panel and a negative 8 formed by the lifting out of the positive 8. Symbolically representing the positive and negative aspects of 1988.
