Throughout the period, he released artworks raising aesthetic questions on art and society, including Flexible Landscape(2008, 2009), Extreme Private Practice(2010), Mutual Escape(2010) and Twin Peaks(2011). He also participated in such group exhibitions as Wrap Around the Time(Nam June Paik Art Center), The special project for the 20th anniversary of the Gwangju Biennale: "Sweet Dew - Since 1980”(The 5.18 Democracy Plaza, Gwangju), The Future is Now!(La Friche Belle de Mai, Marseille) and Bad Boys, Here and Now(Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art). 6min 26sec Artist's Note This work began with the story of a refugee child who was found drowned at the beaches of southern Turkey in fall of 2015 and the mythical story of Orpheus in a cave coming out of the underground world with the soul of his beloved lover. Since liberation in 1945 and the Korean War in 1950 to date, there have been many ideological and poli- tical dispersed families that have forced Koreans to live in Korea for over 70 years. Every time I hear the news of refugees who are forced to leave their home country or homeland and have to escape to another country due to divisions, conflicts and wars that are still taking place in various places, I wish they’d find a place where they can live as human beings. When I looked at this tragic reality, I thought that the situation of contemporary conflict, death, war, divi- sion and dispute could be like a cave where Orpheus is passing by. And I think that the process of Orpheus in the world of death to grab hold of the beloved and get out of it is a process, that should also take place in our minds to not only go beyond the limits of the brutal reality, but also to the world of life and love. My Project “Letter from the Netherworld“ started and progressed in this context. In general, I produced my work with the mise-en-scène in mind, from another perspective, distilled not from the center of the event, but from its periphery. Rather than addressing specific events, I create a mise-en-scène of “slowness and emptiness“ with an interest in the atmosphere and nuances surroun- ding the event – a peripheral vision of the event. Each scene creates sentimental spaces that center around illusionistic factors such as air, fog, light, and sound. Through this slow peripheral process, the metaphor and mood of my work allows the spectators to distance themselves from their hectic daily lives, and leave some room for meditation and self-reflection. I will show the contemporary situation of tragedy which arises due to various disputes arising from the current political and religious confrontation and conflict in the exhibition space. My works are space- mise-en-scène, which is different from the cinematic mise-en-scène, listed in temporal order, and hope- fully the audience will select their own viewing lines and immerse themselves in works by free choice. As a result, I’m hoping for the audience to experience the emotional nuances and atmosphere created in the exhibition space, and to make a comprehensive thought about the limitations facing reality. 작업노트이 작업의 단초는 지난 2015년 가을. 터키 남부 해변가에 익사채로 발견된 난민아이의 인터넷 기사와 사랑하는 연인의 영혼을 데리고 지하세계에서 지상으로 나오는 동굴 속 오르페우스의 신화적 이야기에서 출발하였다. 1945년 해방과 1950 한국전쟁이후 현재까지 이념적 정치적 대립으로 강제적 이산으로인하여 70여년이 지난 지금.생전에 가족을 만나지 못하고 죽는 이들이 많다. 현재도 여전히 동시대 여러 곳에서 일어나고있는 분열, 갈등, 분쟁, 전쟁으로 인하여 부득이하게 강제적으로 고향/고국을 등지고 타국으로 망명하거나 탈출하는 많은 난민의 소식을 접할때마다, 나는 이들 개인들이 겪고있을 비극적 현실의 한계를 넘어 인간적 도리로서 서로 만나 함께 살기를 바라고 있다. 나는 이러한 비극적 현실을 바라볼때, 동시대의 갈등, 죽음, 전쟁, 분열, 분쟁의 상황은 마치 오르페우스가 지나치고 있는 동굴의 상황일 수 있을 것이라 생각하였다. 그리고 오르페우스가 죽음의 세계에서 사랑하는 이의 손을 잡고 빠져나오는 과정은 모든 현실의 한계를 넘어 생명과 사랑의 세계로 나아가고자 하는 나 뿐만 아니라 이를 바라보는 대다수의 사람들의 마음일 것이라는 생각에서 나의 작업은 시작되었다. 대체로 나는 작업과정에서 미장센을 중요하게 염두하며 진행한다. 어떤 사건의 중심이 아닌 주변부에. 그리고 특정 사건을 담기보다는 그 사건을 에워싸고 있는 분위기와 뉘앙스 등에 관심을 두고 ‘느림과 비움’의 미장센을 만들어 가고 있다. 또한 각각의 장면은 주변 상황을 에워싸고있는 공기/안개/빛/소리 등의 환영적 요소들을 중심으로 정서적 공간들을 만들어가고있다. 이 과정들을 통해 나타나는 나의 작업의 은유성과 분위기는 관람자들에게 빠르게 변화 하는 일상과 심리적 거리를 두게하여, 감상자 스스로 공감하고 사유 할수 있는틈을 만들어주고있다. 나는 현재의 정치적, 종교적 대립과 갈등으로 인하여 발생하는 분쟁으로 인하여 발생하는 동시대의 비극적 상황을 전시공간에 펼쳐보일예정이다. 이번 나의 작품들은 시간적 순서로 나열하는 영화적 미장센과는 다른, 공간에 펼쳐보이는 공간-미장센으로서, 관객들 스스로 관람 동선을 선택하고 자유선택에 의해 작품에 몰입할것으로 예상한다. 결과적으로 관객은 전시공간에 구성된 정서적 뉘앙스와 분위기를 경험하여, 현실에 직면한 여러 한계상황에 대한 통합적 사유를 할 것으로 기대하고 있다.
